Scuba Diving in Casa Cenote

Casa Cenote is the first Cenote we dived when we arrived in Tulum. We were both really surprised by this new environment but clearly enjoyed playing in between the different layers of water and see the underwater life growing in the mangrove.

After 4 years of diving and Guiding people in the Cenote around Tulum, sometimes people think we might get bored doing the same dives every day. But we aren’t.

Why did you want to ask? Because Casa Cenote is full of surprises and is never exactly the same each time. It is a really easy nice dive to experience for the first time the cavern environment. We love Casa Cenote and are sure you will too when you decide to come diving with us.

Many Things To See

Casa Cenote is a beautiful place to explore the unique features of a Cenote. It is part of an underground river system that flows to the sea. It is very close to the beach which means that lots of very special things happen here.

Many fish and other marine animals come in to lay their eggs. Some of the offspring have stayed and made the Cenote their home.

We can often see a halocline which is a saltwater sea layer of water that rests below a more freshwater layer above. Sometimes the changing tides in the sea suck in water which creates stunning visual effects.

It’s a great place to enjoy a Cenote diving experience for everyone. The big open water area means it’s safe for inexperienced divers to have fun and the caverns off to the side are fantastic for confident divers to explore the entrance to the largest underwater cave system on earth.

The Cavern Zone

The Cavern area at Casa Cenote is a great place to get acquainted with the overhead environment. It runs just to the side of the open water so we are safely close to the open water at all times. Looking out of the cavern we are greeted with the most amazing light show.

An intense blue and green background is framed with arches of the earth that the roots of the mangroves reach down from.

Photosynthesis causes small oxygen bubbles to rise from the bottom and rays of sunlight seem to dance from above.

The halocline effect creates a river within a river. We see the flowing saltwater below. It’s great fun playing in between the two layers.

Panchito the Crocodile

A few years ago Casa Cenote got a new resident. Hiding in the mangroves was a very small baby Crocodile. The locals called him Panchito.

Believed to be a Morelet’s crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii), also known as the Mexican crocodile. He eats fish, birds and small mammals around the Cenote. Using the dense mangroves as cover to sneak up on his prey before unleashing his explosive attack.

As there is an abundance of food available for him in Casa Cenote he has grown into a healthy adolescent. That it can support such a large predator shows how ecologically diverse the Cenote is.

On the far side of the Cenote, we surface halfway through the dive. More often than not we see Ponchito lying on the rock heating up his dinosaur-like body in the sun.

We surface far from the rock, keep ourselves between you and him and only go as close as you like. So it’s very safe. He hasn’t bitten anyone…Yet.

It’s awesome being able to get so close to such an alpha predator in its natural environment. From a distance, he looks as still as a statue. But as we drift past his expanding chest and occasional blinking eyes give him away.

Sometimes we see him swimming and hunting in the mangroves. We can surface during the dive at casa Cenote and look for Ponchito the Crocodile on a wide variety of tours available at Best Cenote Dives.
